Learn the skills necessary to succeed in your role when moving up in the organisational hierarchy

As you move up an organisational hierarchy from individual contributor to manager and then to manager of managers, it’s important to be mindful of the skills required to be truly successful in each role.
  • According to Aaron, the lines between each position may seem negligible. However, there’s an immense amount of development that is required to transition between each role.

  • For example, when an individual contributor excels in their role and is promoted to a manager of people, they are not only expected to deliver certain execution level results but more importantly are required to deliver results through others. This requires a different set of skills like delegation, conflict management and even communication to inspire their team.

Ultimately, to ensure your success in each role you must first start by identifying the new skills that you need to develop yourself and then spend the time and effort to build them.

How to get ready for a new leadership role

A new leadership role can be daunting. Especially, when you feel like you don’t know everything.
  • According to Aaron, the best way to approach this situation would be to treat the new leadership role as an apprenticeship. When you treat your role like an apprenticeship, you gradually master it one challenge at a time.

  • Start by dipping your toes into the new role and finding out what you are good at, and what you need help on.

  • Take guidance and advice from the people around you. You will have leaders that have put you in this role, speak to them and understand what they saw in you and what they think you need to develop. After all, they will know what skills a great manager in this role need to exhibit as opposed to an adequate manager.
